Deputy Governor of Edo State, Rt. Hon. Comrade Philip Shaibu said the roles of teachers are fundamental in the development of society, while describing them as drivers of the nation’s education system.
The deputy governor made these remarks during an event organized by Seplat Energy for the empowerment of teachers in Benin City.
According to Shaibu, “Teachers are the engines of our education system, training the child to be a global competitor. Under the Edo Basic Education System Transformation Program (EDO-BEST), we have become a role model and set the tone for other states to emulate in its digitalization of education.”
He claimed that there is now uniformity in the education system in Edo State.
“From my office, I can tell you how many teachers we have in our schools, how many students are in the schools, what the students are learning and how they are learning. These are made possible by the state government to digitize its education system. Edo State is ready to partner with Seplat and its sister state, Delta, in any capacity,” Shaibu noted.
Also speaking, Dr Chioma Nwachukwu, Director of External Affairs and Sustainability of Seplat Energy Plc, said that Edo State is committed to transforming its education sector and appreciates every activity aimed at transform the education sub-sector.
Nwachukwu added that Seplat’s education empowerment program aims to ensure national development, by providing teachers and teaching aids to the various communities in their states of operations, because “our vision is to empower more than 10 000 teachers to contribute to the effectiveness of education in Nigeria”.
Earlier in her address, the Edo State Education Commissioner, Dr. Joan Oviawe acknowledged the immense contribution of the Edo State Government to the development of education in Nigeria, which has become the norm for some states across the country, adding that the Edo State government be prepared to partner with Seplat’s educational reforms by “Harnessing the role of technology in education”, the theme of the event .
The Honorable Minister of State for Education, Hon. Chukwuemeka Nwaijuwa, represented by Dr. Muna Adetora, in her address, emphasized the importance of teachers in nation-building, while commending the participants for their strong belief in the teaching profession.
The highlight of the event was the presentation of certificates of distinction to deserving teachers.
