Comrade Bello noted that despite the euphoria of the cancellation, the campaign lamented the huge loss of school time and the huge impact and consequences this had on students and parents, among others.
She said, “SAVE-PUBLIC-EDUCATION-CAMPAIGN, Nigeria, welcomes the appeal of the University Academic Staff Union, ASUU,
of its strike on Friday, October 14, 2022. As a civic group that has been at the forefront of the fight for the amicable resolution of the labor dispute and the return of students to the classroom at universities, we join parents and students across the country who, inadvertently or not, have been caught up in the protracted industrial crisis, breathe a sigh of relief.
“Apart from the euphoria of the end of the strike, the
SAVE-PUBLIC-EDUCATIONCAMPAIGN is however saddened by the gaping loss of school time and the enormous impact and consequences this has had on students and parents, as well as the socio-economic life of the nation as a whole. We mourn the dozens of professors and university professors who have left the shores of Nigeria en masse to offer their services to other nations, an unquantifiable loss to the growth and development of the education of our young Nigerians.
“We are boldly saying that all of this would have been very much avoidable had industry authorities acted more proactively and responsibly.
“We salute the courage of ASUU to strive against all odds and fight to right the wrongs of the university system in Nigeria and duly end industrial action at a time like this, in the paramount interest of our country, Nigeria.”
The human rights activist urged the authorities not to take the academic body and the issues it has raised for granted, but rather to seize the conducive atmosphere created by the end of industrial action, to to deal in a targeted manner with the problems plaguing Nigeria’s education system.
“SAVE-PUBLIC-EDUCATION-CAMPAIGN would like to take this opportunity to strongly instruct the authorities both at the head of the affairs of the country, as well as at the Ministry of Education, not to take the academic body and the problems that he raised for granted with that patriotic Strike Call-off, but rather now seize the conducive atmosphere created by the end of industrial action, and sit down and ostensibly deal with the problems plaguing the educational system of the Nigeria in our two universities, as well as in other levels of education, in a sustainable and sustainable way.
“Finally, we would like to congratulate everyone, who played various roles, both overtly and behind the scenes to end the strike crisis, including trade unions, CSOs, religious groups and individuals, activists, statesmen and women, the media, etc. .
“SAVE-PUBLICEDUCATION-CAMPAIGN would like to encourage all of us to remain vigilant and watch this sector closely to avoid returning to the same situation we find ourselves in today. Let us remember that eternal vigilance, they say, is the price of freedom,” she said.
