A university professor, Professor Sidney Osuji, has identified the proliferation of private schools as one of the major problems affecting the country’s education system.
Professor Osuji, Dean of the Faculty of Education at the National Open University of Nigeria (NOUN), spoke this weekend at a virtual Ezumezu Isinweke summit on the topic; “Structure of education in Ihitte / Uboma, current trends and resolutions”.
The professor said, “To make matters worse, we still depend on the education system entrusted to us by the missionaries. The few transformations we have had in the system are mostly misguided.
“For example, we are calling for mass education and literacy to eradicate illiteracy in the country, but our people are abusing it. If you move from Onicha Uboma to Amainyi or from Nkumato to Abueke or Umuoma, you will see many private schools.
“Their mission is not to educate people but to make money. This is why they employ unqualified teachers to make a profit. While students receive certificates at the end of their schooling.
The professor of measurement and evaluation went further in proposing possible solutions, stating: “We need to start rethinking, rethinking, reorganizing and reorganizing our education system to focus and address specific aspects of the life of the student. our society through which the value and integrity for healthy living is achieved.
The soul of our communities must be embraced in growth and development and through which the seat of knowledge is created.
He said higher institutions should focus and this concentration should be directed towards agriculture, science, technology, vocational training, among others.
“We should elect people who have the best interests of our collective development into offices. Which will give us the type of Education which will give us the knowledge, skills, values, morals, beliefs and habits to eradicate unemployment and idleness in our society.
We should elect people who should provide jobs for educated people, not give them rice.
You know that when wealth is used continuously and not created it will come to an end, but when learning is used continuously it continues to increase, ”he said.
In his remarks, a chairman of the elite group Ezumezu Isinweke Engr. Uzo Okafor appreciated the gift of attending the summit, and summit organizer Cheta Ojukwu, promising that the program has come to stay.
