The Labor Party (LP) candidate for next year’s presidential election, Mr Peter Obi, has said his administration will pursue a MarshalPlan-type education program if elected.
Obi, who spoke at the 95th anniversary of the Queen’s College Lagos Old Girls’ Association in Lagos over the weekend, said the program would incorporate compulsory technical and vocational skills, sports, entrepreneurship, programming and digital skills, from primary to secondary. level.

According to him, Nigeria’s insufficient investment in social sectors such as health, education and housing has resulted in dismal social and demographic trends, reflected in low life expectancy, high maternal mortality rate, high number of out-of-school children, huge unmet housing needs. and high youth unemployment.
He added that his government would improve access to finance, to MSMEs, to young people and to women, in order to drastically reduce unemployment and insecurity. “Our government will prioritize education to fulfill the following functions: technical and industrial relevance; alignment with local comparative advantages and factor endowments; mastery of modern skills, critical thinking, values of ethical citizenship, global competitiveness and exporting talent,” Obi said.
He said his plan is also to “prioritize a structured approach to developing the digital skills of our young population to give them the competitive edge to receive offshore jobs in the new big economy, while improving efficiency and level of productivity of our economy”.
The statement added: “The Obi-Datti administration, if elected, will support national development. Our governance principles, our priority projects and programs must be anchored on the 17 Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs).
Obi further noted that experience has shown that inclusiveness is an essential part of effective public policy-making, emphasizing that he intends to end the under-representation of core components of society. in decision-making such as women, youth and vulnerable people.
He said that if elected, his government “from its inception would encourage investment in infrastructure, energy, transport, irrigation, telecommunications and education, gender mainstreaming and social inclusion in education, business and politics will always be a priority”.
Obi also expressed his commitment to the welfare of girls and women, emphasizing that this will be fully reflected in his general and gender policies.
